Our Foundation

The Foundation for BLSYW (Foundation) encourages Baltimore’s philanthropic, educational, civic and business leaders to invest in and support the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW). BLSYW is a public-private partnership between the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) and the Foundation. BCPSS will provide our school with a BCPSS facility as well as the same per pupil allocation received by other transformation schools. The Foundation will connect with a variety of partnerships to raise funds in support of enrichment opportunities for students and teachers.

The following is a description of the key programs the Foundation will support:

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
STEM: Girls Only!

Recruitment of highly qualified teachers in these hard to staff areas
Professional development for teachers
Curriculum enhancements to encourage experiential learning
Scholarships for student participation in STEM after school and summer enrichment programs
provide a dynamic classroom environment which will include up-to-date laboratory equipment, reference materials, and innovative lab and technological experiences for ALL of our students

Mind, Body and Spirit

Partnerships to address the health and wellness of young women
Teacher training on the social and emotional issues facing young women today
In-school and After-school activities to develop good habits of fitness and wellness
BLSYW Boot Camp – Saturday sessions that assist students to build their academic skills and knowledge

Summer Immersion Experience

In order to orient our new students to our school culture, all incoming students participate in a one week summer program which provides team building and academic enrichment activities
Returning students participate in a one week summer program which builds upon their team building skills and reinforces our culture of high expectations

Teachers of Excellence

BLSYW has established the Faculty and Curricular Advancement Program (FACA). This unique program supports selected faculty to work on projects chosen through a competitive application process and enables faculty to read, research, write and discuss these projects – all in the service of providing the best education possible for BLSYW students
BLSYW Innovation Fund allows every teacher to apply for small grants for resources they cannot obtain through traditional means. Teachers may apply for field trips grants, competition registration, project supplies, resource books and other items necessary to create a dynamic and rigorous classroom environment

 

Destination: College

Sponsorship of at least one college visit at every grade level
Advisory curriculum including concepts of college awareness, application and enrollment proccesses
PSAT and SAT preparation
Support of a full-time college counselor trained by the CollegeBound Initiative
Scholarships for students to participate in summer enrichment experiences on college campuses

Legacy of Leadership

“She Speaks” Lecture Series of monthly visits by women role models
‘Cool Women, Hot Jobs!‘ daylong event engaging women from across the city to come to the school and speak to the students about their education, career experience and work-life balance
Scholarships for students to participate in leadership development activities on the local and national level
Student Led Conferences (SLC) - takes the place of the traditional parent-teacher conference. Students publicly present their academic portfolio to parents, teachers and invited guests and through this process, students reflect on course work, develop presentation skills, and actively participate in the learning process

Cultural Explorations: Arts Enrichment

BLSYW will expose students to a variety of forms of expression which will foster learning through exposure to the arts
Our school is located in the culture center of the city, so we will use the resources of the various galleries, libraries, and other cultural institutions as our community classrooms
