How does the application process work? |
|
| Students are accepted through a lottery process. Interested
students and their parents must obtain an application for the
lottery from the school by attending an informed choice session.
Families must complete the application and return it to the
school in order to enter into the lottery. Students selected
in the lottery will receive letters of acceptance. Students
and parents must sign the letters indicating that they agree
to enroll in BLSYW and return them to the school. Once the signed
letter is received students will be sent information packets
on the BLSYW Summer Orientation Program. |
 |
What criteria are used in making admissions
decisions? |
|
| The Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women is looking
for students who are eligible for promotion to the incoming
grade, accept the school offerings of all girls education, advisory,
uniforms, college preparation, leadership development and uniform
requirement, and show a particular interest in attending BLSYW.
We do not have a minimum test score requirement. |
 |
How many students does BLSYW accept? |
|
| There are only 100 seats in the incoming class. |
 |
Are students who are accepted in to
the middle school in 6th grade automatically accepted into
the high school for 9th grade? |
|
| We expect students to stay at the school through graduation
from 12th grade. |
 |
What is the average class size at BLSYW? |
|
| It is our goal to keep class size around 25 students. Students
are also part of a smaller advisory group, with 15-17 students. |
 |
What is the teaching philosophy at
the BLSYW? |
|
| BLSYW combines the best aspects of traditional and progressive
teaching methods. It is our belief that each student should
be supported in striving for a high standardsof academic achievement
and a committed work ethic. We will challenge students continually
to broaden their understanding of subjects, to broaden their
understanding of themselves, and in so doing, the world. Teachers
utilize student-centered, active, and collaborative learning
to deepen students’ understanding while also focusing
on discrete skills to prepare students for standardized tests.
|
 |
What is the dress code at BLSYW? |
|
| Students at BLSYW are required to wear the school uniform.
Parents can buy pieces of the uniform from an affiliated company.
Some pieces of the school uniform can be bought independently.
|
 |
What after-school activities are offered
at BLSYW? |
|
| Because the primary focus of BLSYW is the academic success
of the students, many teachers offer before and after school
tutoring in academic subjects. Some students are required to
attend these tutorials. Additional after school programs will
include: debate team, dance, BLSYW BodyLove, Girl Scouts, Girls
Engaged in Technology, Public Speakers Club, BLSYW Steppers
and BLSYW Book Club. |
 |
What is required of parents of BLSYW
students? |
|
| BLSYW parents are expected to be actively involved in their
daughters’ education. In addition to regular parent-teacher
conferences at the end of each marking period, the school also
hosts a curriculum night in September for parents to learn more
about what takes place in their daughters’ classes. Parents
are expected to attend these events and be available for conferences
with teachers as needed. BLSYW also expects that all parents
will support the school in giving students extra help and opportunities
to succeed by allowing their daughters’s participation
in after school programs and tutorials. Finally, parents are
encouraged to participate in what will be an active PTA at BLSYW. |
 |
Is this a private school or a charter
school? |
|
| BLSYW is a Baltimore public charter school, operated in partnership
with the Foundation for BLSYW. Publicly funded and open to all
students with no admission testing or screening, we have flexibility
with our school schedule and curriculum that supports student
accountability and academic results. Funding for charter schools
are different than private schools. |
 |
How is the school funded? |
|
| BLSYW is funded through a per pupil allocation from the Baltimore
City Public School System. This allocation covers the basic
costs for teachers, facility and the principal. The Foundation
for BLSYW raises additional funds to support enrichment activities
for teachers and students. |
